Abstract A study was conducted to assess the impact of Kashi Kanchan variety of vegetable cowpea developed at Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi. Seed sale data (2007–2008 to 2013–2014) were collected from IIVR, Varanasi and from a private seed company at Raipur which produces its seeds (2010–2011 to 2012–2013). The IIVR, Varanasi sold 8,323.24 kg truthful seed of Kashi Kanchan to the farmers and Govt. Organizations/Private Agencies in 117 districts of 23 states covering an estimated area of 416.19  ha during 2007–2008 to 2012–2013. The private seed company, of Raipur produced and marketed 189,562.75 kg truthful seed of Kashi Kanchan in 167 districts of 14 states covering an estimated area of 9,478.14 ha during 2010–2011 to 2012–2013. In addition, 626.6 kg of breeder seeds were also produced at IIVR, Varanasi and provided to different organizations in 19 districts of 9 States during 2008–2009 to 2013–2014, which, if converted properly to foundation and then to certified seed (estimated 641,638.4 kg) during 2010–2011 to 2015–2016, the total expected area to be covered would be 32,081.92 ha. Based on the estimated area, a revenue of about 630 crores would have been generated from this variety alone if the pods were sold as fresh vegetable. The per hectare net return from production of Kashi Kanchan during summer and rainy seasons was 103,406/- and 84,142/- with benefit: cost ratio of 2.35:1 and 2.11:1, respectively. Maximum share of total variable cost was of human labour.

About National Digital Library of India (NDLI)
NDLI logo

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
