Description In 1895 a German physicist by the name of W.C. Roentgen discovered a new form of electromagnetic radiation that he called the x-ray. The apparatus that he used to make this discover became known as the x-ray tube. A voltage source creates a current in a circuit that heats up a filament, which then releases electrons through thermionic emission. A second voltage source creates a voltage difference across two electrodes and this high voltage difference accelerates the electrons that are emitted from the filament. These electrons travel through a vacuum and eventually collide with the electrons found in the atoms of the metal plate. These accelerated electrons have a great deal of kinetic energy and can knock off electrons found in the lower energy state of the metal atoms. These vacancies can quickly be filled by electrons found at higher, less stable energy states and this jump-down in energy states releases electromagnetic radiation in the form of x-ray. This process is commonly referred to as Bremsstrahlung, which translates to "breaking radiation". The "braking" comes from the fact that during collision, electrons are decelerated very rapidly and this eventually produces radiation.
