Abstract The solution rheology of blends of poly(vinyl chloride), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (PVC/EVA), poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (PVC/SAN), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (EVA/SAN) and PVC/EVA/SAN have been studied in cyclohexanone as a function of shear rate and composition. These investigations indicate the compatibility of PVC/EVA, partial miscibility of PVC/SAN and the complete immiscible nature of EVA/SAN blends in solution. In the PVC/EVA/SAN ternary blend, both miscible and immiscible compositions exist. The compatible blend exhibits viscosity equal to the additive value under shear and incompatible blend exhibits viscosity lower than the additive value under shear. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
