Abstract The authors develop a model based upon the Stern-Volland model, to describe the convective electric field observed at high latitudes. This electric field is known to be caused by the interaction of the solar wind with the earths magnetosphere. The coupling between the ionosphere and the magnetosphere plays a dominant role in the manifestation of this electric field. The authors also discuss the potentials which are formed to support this electric field, in terms of their model.
