Abstract Multiply-scattered gamma rays from a high-energy source, upon being absorbed, give rise to a secondary flux of annihilation radiation. A procedure is developed, within the framework of the moment method of Spencer and Fano, for calculating the production and diffusion of the annihilation radiation. The treatment includes infinite as well as semi-infinite media. Numerical results are presented for primary radiation sources with energies between two and ten Mev in a lead medium. These results can be represented by simple semiempirical formulas. (auth)
