Abstract A new flat-top format for highly spectrally efficient fibreoptic data communication links is studied. Analytic expressions are obtained for the averaged power spectrum of an optical signal and a strong dependence of the power spectrum shape on the frequency shift of an optical filter with respect to the centre of a specified channel is demonstrated. A direct numerical simulation of multichannel optical communication links based on this format is performed. (fibreoptic data communication)
