Abstract The management science literature provides many techniques and models for multicriteria decision making (MCDM) that can be incorporated into a decision support system (DSS). The hypothesis of this research is that a non-numeric representation of preference can be used by a DSS to direct the questioning of a decision maker in solving an MCDM problem.
