Abstract The optical reflectivity of a vacancy doped colossal magnetoresistance material La{sub 0.936}Mn{sub 0.982}O{sub 3} has been investigated on single-crystal samples as a function of temperature and at zero and 0.5 T magnetic fields. The conductivity has been evaluated by Kramers-Kronig analysis in the frequency range of 100{endash}20000 cm{sup {minus}1}. The broad peak in the optical conductivity, observed at room temperature around 10000 cm{sup {minus}1}, shifts towards zero as the ferromagnetic state develops at lower temperatures. In the transition regime the application of moderate magnetic field also induces a downward shift of the spectral weight. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}
