Abstract The zero-range distorted wave theory of the (t,p) stripping reaction is formulated and compared with recent experimental data. Fair agreement is obtained, but this is probably because the reaction mechanism is direct rather than due to the validity of the stripping assumption. The finite range theory is investigated in an approximation that reduces to the usual cut-off theory and is found to be important. A qualitative discussion is given of the competing two stage process. (auth)
