Abstract The correlation between the total cross section for (d, alpha ) reactions to definite states in /sup 23/Na and /sup 25/Mg and the spin I of these states was investigated experimentally. Bombarding energies from 3.35 to 3.80 Mev and (in the /sup 23/Na case) from 7.1 to 7.7 Mev were employed. In the latter region the total cross sections, when averaged over bombarding energy, were observed to be approximately proportional to (2I + 1). This empirical relntion is used to deduce the spin values for 7 excited states in /sup 23/Na. The /sup 23/Na level scheme is briefly discussed in terms of the rotational model. (auth)
