Abstract Both conceptual and numerical difficulties in the problem of transient stability analysis of power systems increase rapidly when the system size becomes large. Various decomposition techniques are developed within existing large-scale system theories. However, direct application of these techniques is not trivial, it induces new theoretical questions. A strong interaction is needed between complex systems practice and newly developed methods in order to determine an appropriate problem formulation for large-scale systems and to obtain significant results.
