Abstract Taking into account recent developments in microprocessor technology an adaptive control procedure is proposed that incorporates computers with the facility for large scale parallel processing. In particular, a non-gradient based procedure for finding the optimal initial costate vector is extended for online adaptations. The performance of the proposed adaptive controller is then demonstrated using a modified time varying Van der Pol process.
