Abstract This paper presents the feedback control of con gestion length for a traffic network. The conges tion mechanism is described quantitatively based on the volurne balance at each signalized intersection. The signal control system of the congestion length is described by a linear fime-varying discrete dynamic systern in the traffic network. Two signal control al gorithms are presented to control congestion lengths on an arterial; one is a "priority control algorithm", the other is a "balance control al-orithm". A net work signal control algorithm is presented for a traffic network based on the balance control concept. The simulation confirms that cvcle lengths, green time and offsets are sequentially controlled according to the variation of incoming volumes, and three si-nal control algorithms work well to control congestion lengths according to each performance criterion.
