Abstract In recent years, teaching materials and authoring tools, which use Web-based technology, have been developing. Computerization brings benefits in diversifying expressions and providing a simple and easy search function. On the other hand, the computerization of textbooks shows slow progress because textbooks require the book-like story organization such as chapter, paragraph, contents composition etc., which is developed by a textbook author. This means computerization is not always intended for better comprehension of learners. We have developed a software package, aiming to surmount the disadvantages of electronic textbooks and help an author develop his or her own original self-education material, such as image atlantes and illustrated textbooks for medical education. As the software outputs the dynamic HTML files, students can read them, using a Web browser. The software has the following functions: (i) points out the specific position on an image, which is associated with a keyword in a text, (ii) content configured and classified from various viewpoints, (iii) maintain ease of searching, which is the benefit brought by computerization.
