Abstract This paper describes a vibration monitoring methodology for rolling element bearings based on using laser displacement sensor technology. This new method not only has feature of discontiguous measurement, but also installs laser sensor easily. It can overcome the defects that installation of accelerometer sensor is very diffculty as to old machinery or shield and insulation of measurement system. In combination with displacement signal of laser sensor, statistic analysis, spectrum are used for fault detection and diagnosis of bearing. Experiment results have shown that these techniques are more effective as to fault detection from the diagnostic signals of laser displacement sensor. The technique enhances traditional bearing failure diagnosis technology and provides a new means of failure diagnosis of machinery.
