Abstract The effect of heating on the optical properties of Yb{sup 3+}-doped fibres is studied. It is shown that the lasing efficiency of fibre lasers depends on the fibre temperature, the type and extent of the effect being substantially dependent on the laser wavelength. It is proposed to use fibre heating to increase the efficiency of lasers emitting in the 1.15 - 1.2-{mu}m region. (optical fibres and fibre lasers)
