Abstract Suppression of {ital m}=2, {ital n}=1, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mode in an ohmically heated plasma by localized electron cyclotron heating (ECH) is observed in the WT-3 tokamak. It is found that both {ital m}=1 and {ital m}=2 modes can be simultaneously suppressed by ECH near the {ital q}=1 surface as well as the {ital q}=2 surface, where {ital q} is the safety factor. Soft X-ray tomography results show that {ital m}=1 and {ital m}=2 modes are coupled through toroidicity.
