Abstract The authors have studied the crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, and oxygen concentration in single-phase samples of high T/sub c/RBa/sub 2-y/K/sub y/CU/sub 3/IO/sub x/ (where y = 0 to 1 for R = Y and Eu), and in nonsuperconducting PrBa/sub 2-y/K/sub y/Cu/sub 3/O/sub chi/ (y = 0 to 1.5). The YBa/sub 2-y/K/sub y/Cu/sub 3/O/sub chi/ samples all have the same orthorhombic structure and almost the same T/sub c/, even though chi = 6.1 for y = 1. EuBa/sub 2-y/K/sub y/Cu/sub 3/O/sub chi/ evolves from orthorhombic to tetragonal structure, and T/sub c/ progressively drops, with increasing y; for y = 1 it is no longer superconducting. The mixed-valent Pr in PrBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ becomes tetravalent in the presence of /Kappa//sup +/ ions substituted for Ba/sup ++/. The decrease in cation charge reduces both the oxygen concentration and the average valency of the Cu in all three systems.
