Abstract The photoproduction of pion pairs is investigated by analysis of the matrix element in terms of the angular momentum and isospin states. The integral equation for the production amplitude is solved under certain broad assumptions and an estimate of rescattering corection arising out of the many particle intermiediate states is obtained and shown to be small at least in the sub-Bev region. The effect of pion-pion resonance is shown to be small for energies up to about 700 Mev of the incident photon. (auth)
