Abstract The vibrational fundamentals of solid CH/sub 3/Cl, CH/sub 3/Br, and CH/ sub 3/I and of their fully deuterated counter-parts were exam ined at 77 deg K under high resolution. CH/sub 3/Cl/sup 35/ was synthesized and its omega /sub 3/ spectrum compared to that of ordinary CH/sub 3/Cl, permitting the assignment of the Ch/sub 3/Cl/sup 35/ and CH/sub 3/Cl/sup 37/ con tributions in the nu /sub 3/ multiplet structure. The relative intensities of absorption in 1:1 CH/sub 3/X:CD/ sub 3/X solid solutions were measured to test the relationship between splitting, frequency, and absorption intensity predicted by the dipolar correlation model. The test proved to be insensitive. A study of the nu /sub 3/ absorption of each component in CH/sub 3/Cl: CD/sub 3/Cl solid solutions throughout the concentration range shows that multiplet splitting persists at concentrations as low as 1%.
