Abstract The authors present a study of the neutral winds in the E region over the polar regions. The motion of the neutral background is a major player in the electrodynamic interaction of the magnetosphere with the upper atmosphere. Here the authors look at the seasonal variations, and the typical background wind velocities, as well as study the influence of tides in the wind. Their data comes from incoherent scatter radar, and shows altitude dependence also. The mean winds tend to be eastward or westward, while the northern or souther components are smaller, and the vertical component is smaller still.
