Abstract In order to estimate performance of the plasma lens precisely, the plasma density distribution along the beam line was calculated by the direct simulation Monte-Carlo method. The main component of the FFTB plasma lens is a gas-filled pipe with two holes enabling the particle beams to penetrate it. The plasma is produced either by the laser ionization or by the beam self-ionization. The working gas or the ionized plasma is released from the two holes which modifies the lens performance from the designed. This paper reports the gas release studied by the direct simulation Monte-Carlo method. {copyright} 1995 {ital American Institute of Physics}.
