Abstract The ratio k/sub H//k/sub D/ for acid cleavage of CH/sub 3/0CH/sub 2/CH/ sub 2/HgI and its 1,1,2,2-tetradeuterio analog is 1.06 0.02. This isotope effect, combined with the known vibrational frequencies of the substrates and metal-olefin complexes, precludes the extensive participation of a mercuric- olefin complex in the transition state resonance hybrid. The small isotope effect also tends to preclude extensive carbonium ion character in the transition state. It can be accommodated by a substratelike model of the transition state in which the methyleneoxygen bond is breaking. (auth)
