Abstract Breeding of maize at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Novi Sad, based on heterosis phenomenon started in the middle of last century. The permanent goal in selection in past and future has been in increasing grain yield potential, reducing water content and improving adaptability to stressful conditions. New NS maize hybrids NS 5073, NS 5120, NS 5021 and NS ALEKSANDRA exceeded standard hybrid in yield by 0.984tha-1 in the average, which represents an increase at about 112 kg per cycle of selection. Besides higher grain yield, new hybrids have lower moisture content, better pest's resistance and stable performance in various conditions.
