Abstract Open Access is being increasingly projected as a solution to the crisis in access to scholarly research triggered by the high cost of periodical publications. This paper sets the movement against the backdrop of factors that contributed to the OA, examines the major solutions practiced and proposed to overcome the barriers to access scholarly research. The paper also highlights some of the issues that are being raised which need to be addressed
