Abstract Due to the small emittance, radiation from neighboring poles of a strong wiggler in future multi-bend achromat-based storage rings can exhibit sharp interference patterns. The spectral-angular distributions of the 3-pole wiggler for the proposed Advanced Photon Source (APS) upgrade were computed and prominent interference patterns were found. In this paper we provide an understanding of such interference patterns. The equations governing the interference pattern are described and computed spectral-angular distributions of a modeled 3-pole wiggler magnetic field using these equations are presented.
