Abstract The subject of this paper is an APL utility function with simple, powerful, and coherent input-checking features. The function requests from the user some specific input, validates it, and returns a result in “massaged” form. CHECK embodies a consistent user-friendly approach to dialogue. It allows the user to enter HELP, STOP, END, “macros”, and other special entries. It also allows the user fairly unrestricted access to native APL. These design features will enhance many large applications.
