Abstract In this article the distribution of the transverse component of magnetization of recorded tracks is extensively studied for different track widths and various recording frequencies by using the spin-stand imaging technique [Mayergoyz , J. Appl. Phys. 87, 6824 (2000)]. It is demonstrated that for narrow tracks the transverse magnetization component can be quite substantial and it significantly protrudes toward the track center. {copyright} 2001 American Institute of Physics.
