Abstract We show that recent fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectra of C{sub 60} can be combined with earlier theoretical and experimental results to locate the origins of the two lowest single excited states, namely S{sub 1}(T{sub 1g}) and S{sub 2}(G{sub g}). At the same time, we assign all the prominent features of fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectra. 18 refs., 1 figs., 5 tabs.
