Abstract High-energy ion scattering has been used to study the clean Mo(100) reconstruction and the modifications caused by hydrogen adsorption. The results indicate that at room temperature the clean surface is disordered and that the atomic displacements are comparable to those at low temperature. The experiments also show that the surface-atom displacements at any fixed coverage in the hydrogen phases are approximately independent of temperature between 10 and 300 K.
