Abstract The reaction {ital pp}{r_arrow}{pi}{ital d} is studied in a relativistic meson rescattering model. For 1.3{le}{ital T}{sub {ital p}}{le}2.4 GeV the differential cross section and the asymmetry are calculated and compared to experiment. The model introduces a simple form factor for each {pi}{ital N} partial wave which depends on the virtuality of the exchanged meson representing {pi} and {rho} exchange. All remaining input is derived from experimental constraints. The data for the cross section can be described by energy independent form factors. The asymmetries are sensitive to {ital pp} distortion factors and further details of the model. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
