Abstract We have calculated the ({ital p},{pi}{sup {minus}}) spectra for calcium isotopes based on a two-nucleon pion-production model. In the near-threshold region, the observed selective excitation of high-spin states is well explained. The experimental data are reproduced within a factor of 2{endash}3. In the higher-energy region, our calculation predicts a pronounced selectivity for stretched two-particle{endash}one-hole high-spin states. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
