Abstract New one-dimensional compounds Ca{sub 3}CoBO{sub 6} (B = Ir, Ru) with K{sub 4}CdCl{sub 6}-type structure have been synthesized by conventional solid state reactions. Both compounds adopt the rhombohedral symmetry with the space group R{bar 3}c; a = 9.1811(1) {angstrom}, c = 10.8232(3) {angstrom}, Z = 6 (hexagonal expression) for Ca{sub 3}CoIrO{sub 6} and a = 9.1921(3) {angstrom}, c = 10.7784(7) {angstrom}, Z = 6 for Ca{sub 3}CoRuO{sub 6}. One-dimensional chains are built by alternating face-shared CoO{sub 6} octahedra and BO{sub 6} trigonal prisms. The magnetic susceptibility of Ca{sub 3}CoIrO{sub 6} shows an abrupt drop at 30 K, as seen in the antiferromagnetically. On the contrary, Ca{sub 3}CoRuO{sub 6} is an ordinary antiferromagnet with T{sub N} = 55 K. The authors have also succeeded in preparing the solid solution series, Ca{sub 3}Co{sub 1+x}Ir{sub 1{minus}x}O{sub 6} and Ca{sub 3}Co{sub 1+x}Ru{sub 1{minus}x}O{sub 6} (0 {le} x {le} 1), and magnetic properties of these systems were investigated.
