Abstract Examination of a large assortment of radioinduced mutants of Pisum sativum showed that even the most productive mutants have only limited possibilities for use in practical plant breeding. In almost all the forms examined, the mutated gene is responsible not only for the positive characteristics found, but also for the negative ones as well. This pleiotropy of gene effect is very widespread, and forms a limiting factor in mutational breeding. In rare cases the productive level of mutants is further lowered by penetrative weakening of the mutated genes. (auth)
