Abstract The suppression of the speckles produced by a random phase plate is described. The contrast of the speckles is reduced at 30{percent} by a polarization rotator array (PRA). The PRA is made from the liquid crystal (LCPRA). The aperture of the LCPRA is 80 mm{phi} and element size is about 2 mm square. The number of the element is about 1200. The damage threshold is about 11 J/cm{sup 2} (532 nm, 0.9 ns). {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
