Abstract Not only for the physics understanding of tokamak confinement, but also for the deliberate control of the plasma pressure and current density profiles, which is prerequisite for the improvement of fusion performances, tokamak diagnostics have demonstrated their effectiveness and capabilities to resolve various plasma parameters with detailed profile information. Above all, laser-aided diagnostics have pervasively implemented in the tokamak experiments to allow non-perturbative measurement of high-temperature plasmas, and they have hitherto made significant progress through large tokamak applications. This paper describes the recent development on the laser-aided diagnostics as well as the issues involved in the International Thermonuclear Reactor (ITER) application. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
