Abstract A method is developed for obtaining the probabilities associated with the linearly anisotropic component of the flux incident on the fuel region from the moderator, having in mind the well-known scheme that utilizes modified diffusion theory in the moderator and collision probability methods in the multi- annular fuel region. Exact reciprocity theorems are established for the anisotropic probabilities, which, when combined with an extension of an approximation proposed by Bonalumi (1961) for the isotropic case, enable rapid calculations to be carried out. Numerical results are given for a calculation demonstrating the range of validity of the approximations used in both Bonalumi's isotropic case and the present anisotropic work, and tables are presented which should facilitate computation.
