Abstract Experiments have been carried in the LIN-5 mirror system with an electrostatic system for suppressing the flute instabillty, supplemented by a special device for automatically controlling the feedback ratio. The behavior of the system corresponds to conclusions reached on the basis of a model. The system can be used for diagnostics, to study the radial profile of waves in a plasma, and to determine the reasons for density limitations.
