Abstract Analytic equations are derived to relate the ion current drawn by the probe to the properties of the time-varying plasma. The cases of plane, cylindrical, and spherical probes are considered. Simple equations, convenient for practical use, are found. Analysis of the ion branch of the probe characteristic makes it possible to find both the charged-particle density and the effective ionization and recombination coefficients in the plasma.
