Abstract Work by Jortner and Sharf indicate absorption in frozen aqueous solutions of alkali metal hydroxides at 17,000 cm<sup>-1</sup> after exposure to 200 kv x rays. A model is proposed that attributes the reaction observed by Jortner and Sharf to trapping of electrons as in F-centers to give the required solvated center. An investigation of frozen aqueous alkali metal hydroxide systems by visible and electron spin resonance was undertaken, and results seem to support the model.
