Abstract The spin-orbit interaction of a particle in a non-central self- consistent field of the Woods-Saxon type is investigated for light nuclei. It is shown that in the expansion of the wave function in 1-waves the particle states of orbital momentum 1/sub max/ + 2 of the shell considered are essential. The scheme of single-particle states is calculated for A = 10 and 25. A satisfactory agreement with experiment is obtained for /sup 25/Mg and /sup 29/Si. (auth)
