Abstract Thermal evaporation technique was used to prepare thin films of MoO{sub 3}. X-ray diffraction measurements found that as-deposited films of MoO{sub 3} were amorphous which crystallized to orthorhombic phase on annealing at 623K for 1h in air. The optical band gap of the films decreases from 3.1eV to 1.7eV upon crystallization. Short range structure of the as deposited films and annealed films were studied by Raman spectroscopy and it consisted of MoO{sub 6} units.
