Abstract The conditions of existence of surface electromagnetic waves with negative and zero group velocities propagating in a thin metal film bounded by dielectric media with different refractive indices are found. Analytic expressions are derived to determine the group velocities of such waves, which are of interest for calculating and optimising optical systems of insulator-metal-insulator type. (nonlinear optical phenomena)
