Abstract The unresolved factors in the economic evaluation of nuclear power production include lifetime of the nuclear power plant, burnup time of the fuel elements, and annual number of hours of utilization. These factors are discussed. The development of nuclear power in Germany and other countries is reviewed, and its possible contribution to the total power consumption is estimated. Future prospects of coal in power production are discussed. (J.S.R.)
