Abstract The authors used magnetic field measurements, and particle diagnostics on Akebono to study field-aligned current systems in the nightside auroral oval, and to relate the observed current systems to structures in the plasma sheet. They observe two main current systems, one quite narrow in latitude, and the other much broader latitudinally. Both seem to exist in closed field line regions. Then from interpretation of charged-particle precipitation fluxes the authors argue about the origins of these different current systems when mapped to the plasma sheet.
