Abstract Heteropoly acids with the composition H/sub 3+n/PMo/sub 12-n/V/sub n/O/sub 40/ catalyze the bromination of arenes in the ring in HOAc-H/sub 2/O solution when HBr and O/sub 2/ are used as the brominating agent. The reaction proceeds through the oxidation of Br/sup -/ to Br/sub 2/ by means of oxygen with p-HPA (p-heteropoly acids) as the catalysts.
