First, a time-of-flight technique was used to observe the neutron spectra from Ar/sup 40/(p,n)K/sup 40/ and the corresponding Q's were computed. Second, the thresholds for production of certain gamma rays from this reaction were measured; these thresholds provided another set of values for the Q's. When these Q values were combined with measurements of the gamma-ray energies, a mass difference equivalent to 1.522 sintering time 0.006 Mev between Ar/sup 40/ and K/sup 40/ and an energy release of 60 sintering time 8 kev in the decay of K/sup 40/ to Ar/sup 40/ was obtained. This appears to conflict with other information on this branch of the decay of K/ sup 40/.(auth) ISSN 0031899X Educational Use Research Learning Resource Type Article Publisher Date 1959-02-01 Publisher Department Argonne National Lab., Lemont, Ill.
