Abstract Bulk samples of surface water and coal were collected and concentrated. The solution obtained from preliminary treatment of the coal and an aliquot of the evaporated water sample were analyzed by the method of Goldin. An argon gas flow proportional counter was used. Radium contents of 36 samples of untreated surface water in New South Wales and Queensland and results of coal fraction analyses are presented in tabular form, The highest activity found in surface waters was about one-sixteenth of the maximum permissible dose established by ICRP. At present the only conclusions to be drawn from coal analyses is that there is a tendency for Ra/sup 226/ to be associated with minerals in coal seams. (H.M.G.)
