Abstract An investigation was undertaken to study the effect of starter solutions i. e. S0 (Control), S1 (ammonium sulphate and single super phosphate in 1:2 parts) and S2 (urea, single super phosphate and potassium nitrate in 1:1:2 parts) and growth regulators viz. NAA and GA3 (each at 5, 25, 50 and 75 ppm concentrations) on growth, yield and quality of cabbage cv. „Golden Acre‟ at ASPEE Agricultural Research and Development Foundation Farm, Met-Nare, Dist. Thane. The results revealed that among the different starter solutions, the starter-S2 containing urea, single super phosphate and potassium nitrate gave significantly maximum establishment of seedlings (88.06%), maximum plant height (34.51 cm), maximum plant spread (52.51 cm), maximum diameter of stem (1.94 cm), maximum number of leaves per plant (19.99), maximum leaf area (96.60 dm2), maximum leaf area index (4.77), maximum dry matter per plant (156.73g) early head initiation, minimum duration for head development (34.14 days) and earlier head harvesting from transplanting (77.89 days), highest length (13.65 cm) and breadth (12.02 cm) of heads with minimum ratio of compactness (1.26), highest head yield (32.66 t/ha) and maximum uptake of NPK. The nutritive value was also increased significantly over control by same treatment and recorded maximum moisture (91.91%) content, maximum ascorbic acid (49.71 mg/100g), highest protein content (2.57%) and 3.98 per cent as highest carbohydrate content. The control (S0) treatment recorded highest TSS content (5.33%). Chlorophyll – a and b contents were also highest in the same treatment (0.173 and 0.243 mg/g, respectively). The PLW of cabbage heads was increased due to starter solution application and shelf life was found to be reduced. 16 Among the growth regulator treatments, spray of GA3 at 50 ppm recorded significantly highest establishment of seedlings (93.23%), maximum plant height (34.48 cm), maximum plant spread (53.49 cm), maximum diameter of stem (2.02 cm), maximum number of leaves per plant (20.92), maximum leaf area (100.42 dm2), maximum leaf area index (4.96), maximum dry matter content per plant (157.33 g), earlier head initiation, minimum number of days required for head development and harvesting (34.47 and 77.50 days, respectively), maximum length (14.01 cm) and breadth (12.55 cm) of heads with 1.23 as a minimum ratio of compactness, maximum yield of heads (32.60 t/ha) and maximum uptake of N, P and K nutrients as compared to other treatments. The chemical composition of cabbage was also increased in same treatment and produced heads with maximum ascorbic acid content (49.89 mg/100g), maximum protein (2.63%) and carbohydrate content (3.99%). The highest moisture content (91.99%) was recorded in NAA 75 ppm treatment while, GA3 at 5 ppm recorded highest TSS percentage (5.23). However, NAA at 50 ppm recorded significantly highest chlorophyll a and b contents (0.189 and 0.284 mg/g, respectively). The PLW percentage was highest in NAA 75 ppm treatment and shelf life was highest under GA3 5 ppm treatment. Within the interaction effects, the interaction of starter-S2 (urea, SSP and KNO3 in 1:2:1 parts) alongwith 50 ppm GA3 foliar spray resulted in significantly maximum establishment of seedlings (95.32%), maximum plant height (35.87 cm), maximum plant spread (54.10 cm), maximum diameter of stem at base (2.21 cm), maximum number of leaves per plant (21.40), maximum leaf area (109.93 dm2), maximum leaf area index (5.43) significantly highest dry matter contents per plant (170.46 g), early head initiation, early head formation and earlier head harvesting of cabbage after transplanting (73.20 days), with highest length and breadth of heads 15.31 cm and 13.58 cm, respectively, minimum compactness ratio (1.19), maximum yield per hectare (36.70 t) as compared to control (S0G0) treatment. Significantly, highest nutritive value was observed in the same treatment combination and recorded maximum ascorbic acid content (53.43 mg/100g), maximum protein content and carbohydrate (2.92 and 4.04 %, respectively). The S2N4 treatment combination recorded maximum moisture content (92.14%) and TSS content was highest (5.46%)in S0G1 treatment combination. The chlorophyll a and b contents were significantly highest (0.220 and 0.310 mg/g) in starter-S2 alongwith 50 ppm NAA treatment. The treatment combination of S2N4 i. e. starter S2 alongwith 75 ppm NAA increased the PLW of cabbage heads and recorded minimum (6.42 days) shelf life at ambient storage temperature condition. From these studies, it could be inferred that „Golden Acre‟ cultivar of cabbage can be successfully cultivated under Konkan agrolimatic conditions during rabi season with application of starter solution (urea, SSP and KNO3 in 1:2:1 parts) alongwith GA3 50 ppm foliar spray applied twice, i. e. just after transplanting and 15 days thereafter so as to get early crop with maximum production of heads per hectare and with good nutritive value.
