Abstract The field experiment and laboratory incubation studies were conducted to study the effects of nitrification inhibitors Neem cake, karanj cake, castor cake, kerosene, neem oil, karanj oil, castor oil and urea-DAP briquettes on mineralization of urea nitrogen in soil and yield along with nutrients uptake by maize grown on Inceptisol during kharif season 2005-2006. The field experiment was conducted at Post Graduate farm while laboratory incubation study was conducted at Department of Agril. Chemistry and soil science, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri. The Soil was medium olw in available nitrogen, medium in phosphorus and organic carbon but high in potassium content. Both the laboratory and field experiments were laid out in a randomized block design with ten treatments replicated thrice. The different nitrification inhibitors listed above were used by blending with urea treatment, except briquettes. The results obtained in incubation study showed that neem cake blended urea slowed down ammonification and nitrification and maintained higher levels of N03--N in soil for longer period giving promising results. Karanj cake blended urea and neem oil also retarded the mineralization of urea considerably but behaved on par with each other. Similarly, under field condition plant studies, the cent application of neem cake @ 6 per of urea significantly increased the height and number of leaves over control. The highest grain and fodder yields were also obtained with neem cake blended urea. It was followed by karanj cake and neem oil blended urea. The uptake of N, P, K were also increased in maize grain and fodder under neem cake blended urea treatment. Thus, the results obtained indicated that among the different nitrification inhibitors used in the present investigation, urea blended with neem cake @ 6 per cent inhibited rapidly urea-N mineralization and sustained maximum plant growth and yield of maize over karanj cake and neem oil blended urea and control. The fertilizer nitrogen use efficiency was increased by 13.75 per cent using neem cake blended urea over urea alone. It was followed by karanj cake (11.55 %) and neem oil (7.77 %).
